Before we dwelled into the lessons, we revised previous class and went into character analysis of Kunti and Karna. Were they justified in their actions, why and why not. It was surprising to hear the mature questions and answers that were asked by the kids and their depth of understanding. Some of the questions we discussed are
- Do you think Kunti made the right choice by telling Karna the truth before the war? Why or why not?
- Was Karna right to keep fighting for the Kauravas even after learning the truth?
- What does this story teach us about duty and loyalty?
- They formed the army in seven divisions and appointed heads for each one of them, The question arose on who will be the Chief of Army. The custom in those days was to ask the views of the youngest to boost their confidence and avoid honest differences of opinion to be mistaken as disrespect. In that order first Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna, Bheema were asked for opinion. Each one of them proposed, King Virat, Drupada, Dhrishtdyumna, Shinkandin respectively with very well thought out reasons. Finally Yudhishtra requests Krishna to make the final decision. And Dhrishtdyumna is appointed Commander in Chief of the Pandava army
- On the Kaurava side Duryodhana requests Bhishma to take charge of the army. To which Bhishma puts down a few conditions. He says that he will not kill any of the pandavas. And also since Karna is always opposing Bhishma and if has issues with him, he should be given that position. To which Karna vows that he will not enter the battle field until Bhishma is incapacitated to fight, Thus it was decided that Bhishma will be Commander in Chief of the Kaurava army.
- Balarama visits the pandava camp. Having heard that the peace talks have failed and bloodbath is the reality, he tells Dharmaraja that since Duryodhana and Pandavas are same to both of them, they should not indulge themselves in the quarrel. But Krishna's love for Arjuna has force him to take their side.
- As for him, Duryodhana and Bheema both being his disciples, it is immoral for him to take sides. So he expresses his decision to remain neutral in the war.
- Balarama's decision stands as an example on how good and honest men find themselves in perplexing situations. The dishonest men will have no such issues because they are always working in the interest of the self. The solutions to complex perplexing situations does not conform to a moral norm often making them scapegoats of their circumstances making their decisions so much more difficult and evasive.
